When to go? / Weather

You can go here at any time of the year as the temperature is high year round on the islands of the Suratthani province. The monsoon or rain season is normally occurring from September until November, but usually there are many days with sunshine and blue sky at this period too.

How to get there / Travel / Save money Advice

The cost to fly to Koh Samui from the UK is around 525 - 650 GBP to Bangkok, and then at Bangkok /Suvarnabhumi airport (the main airport) you can either book your connecting flight to Samui when your there or do it in advance via the internet at www.bangkokairways.com as you need to fly to Bangkok first in order to fly to samui, i.e. Bangkok to samui return expect to pay around 5,500baht /100GBP. Ive found no cheaper to book in advance via the internet than in person from Bangkok to samui as there are usually special offers on only available when booking in person.

I advise to shop around for your flight to Bangkok, prices vary. a lot. book early, and ask your travel agent when is the cheapest time to fly from your country to Bangkok. you could save a bundle going when is cheapest. Its a long flight which puts many people off but it is a beautiful and exhilarating place to visit.

You can catch a train down to Suratthani and then catch a fast ferry to Samui. it's a long train and boat ride or a 1 hr flight for a little extra. The Plane is the logical choice.

Use Listerine after cleaning teeth to minimize the risk of catching a stomach bug.

How Long can you go without applying for a visa - 28 days without a tourist visa /

Tourist visa - Cost 28 GBP more if you use agency to help prepare paperwork, (wise to get before going for over a months stay/ upto 3 month. valid for upto 3 months. extenable for 30 days at a neighbouring country.

Barter for a better deal and never take your first offer being not from Thailand. Always assume you are being charged twice even as much a 6 times as much as a Thai person next to you would be charged. My advice for getting a good fair deal is reply back saying only half there suggested asking price, then see what deal you get. or try look interested, say how much, then look away and look into space and day dream, they will offer cheaper price, then keep saying no, no, no, until in the end he offers so cheap price you cant say no. happened to me once. I got a 600 baht skull ashtray for an un-believable 50 baht in the end ! All Thai's never give you a good deal to start with to westerner's coz they know were loaded with cash on holiday.

Try not to feel pressured to buy things you don't want or need from children selling roses that wont go away, to necklaces, to animals such as eagles and monkeys.

Also don't buy if you don't want is the name of the game. People are so persistent at times coz they can almost smell your money as your well dressed & western they don't take no for an answer and anger you. If this happens don't get angry yourself. just say no money, avoid eye contact or browsing in shops to much and you can avoid a lot of hassle from people trying to sell you stuff you don't want. The beach is a bad place for not getting a moments peace. All day long your pestered to buy things, some are welcome like ice cream or beach-towels, others are not but they keep coming - all day !

Try keep your cool when taxi men call at you, it does get a bit annoying and even irritating sometimes.

Ofcourse don't forget suncream especially on tours at sea.

I would only use bottled water if you need it and for cleaning teeth and cooking etc. The local bug can be a nasty tummy bug which you would be much better off not catching, as your not from Thailand if you drink the tap water you are very high risk of catching something. very high. don't risk it is my advise. It is a min-nor inconvenience. Should the worst happen and you do get sick there is a modern hospital on the island. - use Listerine after doing teeth with tap water to kill potential harmful bacteria that your body has no defence against.

Also save at-least 500 / 1000 baht for emergency's, good place to keep is in your passport if not using it for renting or keep in the safe box.

Not advised to walk around showing your mobile or flashing your wallet. There is very little crime on samui (surprisingly) but you dont want to invite it. Most crime involving tourists include theft/missing items.

There is very little crime here (don't let the extra bathroom window lock make you think there is, It is purely an added extra measure. As I saw the bathroom window as un-secure. (Studio 2 is the only Studio with a lock on the bathroom window)

Be careful of some wildlife. stepping on horn beetles which are quite large as they tend to crawl around the patio in the early hours of the morning could be quite painful to step on. Mosquitoes come out in late afternoon so if you do anything in the jungle best do before dusk as you may get bitten by mosses especially in the inner Island jungle area. (Is why most safari's start early in the morning and finish mid afternoon) and be advised there are snakes, scorpions, and spiders on the Island. Mostly inland. Be-careful if your venturing around the jungle on a tour not to walk into a spiders web (i almost did) and if you see any retreat calmly and lastly the locals have warned me about millipeeds. That they are poisionous and very dangerous and come in all sizes. Best not to touch those and if the worst should happen and your bitten by a millipeed, spider, scorpion, or snake, go straight to hospital and get as much info on what the creature that bit looked like. I presume the hospital will have knowledge on the wildlife and know the consequences and what to do. There are two or three good hospitals on the island so you know your never far from proffessional medical care. better safe than sorry.

If you use a Jet-ski on the beach check its condition good before using. highlight every scratch, dmage seen (there have been reports of tourists getting scammed for damage that they didnt do on Jet-ski's in Samui's Chaweng and Lamai beaches)

If you have a budget food from the market is very cheap and you can cook your own food. (market is right at seven eleven - not too far away/within walking distance)

Finally please be care-ful on the road. Some Thai drivers are mad and overtake on corners. (most go slow but are clueless regarding rules of the road) Only overtake when you can see clearly in front of you. Samui has one of the highest death rates in Thailand per head. higher than the mainland and even Bangkok and is very dangerous to go fast like western ways. Drive Slow and your be fine. If you rent a motorbike take it SLOW as there are countless dogs walking in the road who ignore you as you narrowly miss them (crazy dogs), and lots of thai drivers who havet a clue and dust / sand patches on the road that can cause the back tyre to slip out. Its a very dangerous way to get around. but economical. experience of riding a motorbike is essential if riding a bike in thailand. preferable many years of driving cars and bikes.
