Getting around Samui
First and most obvious choice for comfort and safety is to rent a car.
You can rent a car and is widely available on the Island, Rates start from 1200 Baht per day, depending on the type and condition of the vehicle. Some of these vehicles come with insurance, but the coverage is limited. Ask for details when hire.
Motorbike rental
A motorbike is the most convient way to get around town. Rates have dipped in 2009 to 180 baht per day for a Moped. (upto 250 baht per day) I think because of competition. You can bargain for a discount on long term rental. 180 Baht per day for longterm rental for a Automatic moped (over a week you should get / find)
Motorbike Recommendation / Rental
A good place to rent not to far away from Plai Laem is Bunpa Travel. They have 125 automatic scooters in good condition for only 180 baht per day. Find them at 9/45 Moo 3 Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui, Tel: 077-601000 mobile 081-7874470 or 081-3261371 (on the main road into Chaweng opposite Anong Restaurant. (top restaurant) Your'll need to leave your passport with them and pay inadvance to rent a bike.
Songtaew
Red coloured, converted pickup trucks with two long bench seats facing eachother serves as the Islands local bus service. They follow set routes to and from most destinations around the Island, The destinations are clearly marked in clear English on the front and the back of the vehicle. Daytime rates are between 40 / 60 Baht per passenger, depending on where you are going, after 9pm you may havet to charter a Songtaew if you want to travel between different resorts. rates vary. Barter is my advise. you always get a better deal. usually they ask for 200 to 300 to to half or a third even around the island. (more than the tourist info leaflet actually stated)
Yellow Taxi
Air Conditioned car taxis are in yellow, most have meters but though frowned upon by law, most taxi drivers insist on a negotiated price before hiring the cab. usually ask for 200 or 300 baht for a ride.
If you like to use Taxi's, if you use one they will alomst certainly give you a card and say call anytime. maybe good to use the same good one as not all taxi drivers are safe drivers.
Motorbike taxi
Motorbike taxi drivers can be identified by their coloured numbered (usually purple) vests. For short journeys they are the fastest and cheapest way for short journeys as they can dodge their way through traffic. Fares start from 30 Baht upwards depending on where you are going.
Bicycle
Good Quality mountain bikes can be rented at many places around the Island for around 150 baht. They are ideal for those who want to discover some of the many beautiful nature trails and tracks of the Islans interior.
If your a sensible and a safe driver on a motorbike and can ride one, rent a scooter for 180 baht a day and your have freedom and cheaper than taxi's. I advise a pair of sun glasses not too dark that cover your eyes (as best as possible to protect your eyes from dust and dirt, fly's etc) and be careful of the quite literaly hundreds of dogs that just sit and walk in the road quite dosile. Is a wonder that many are not run over.
